New York mayor directs Finance Department to investigate Trump inheritance

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Twitter [tweet] Tuesday that he has directed the city’s Department of Finance to “immediately investigate tax and housing violations and to work with NY State to find out if appropriate taxes were paid” hundreds of millions of dollars US President Trump inherited from his father.

De Blasio was responding to a New York Times article [NYT report] Tuesday that said Trump had received at least $413 million in today’s dollars from his father’s real estate empire, much of it through tax dodges in the 1990s.

In a press briefing Tuesday night, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said [CBS News report, YouTube]: “Many decades ago the IRS reviewed and signed off on these transactions.”
