Senate Judiciary Committee advances Kavanaugh nomination to Senate floor

The Senate Judiciary Committee [official website] voted [Periscope] 11-10 Friday to advance Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh [SCOTUSblog profile] for a full vote on the Senate floor.

The vote was along party lines, with the 11 committee Republicans voting in favor of Kavanaugh’s advancement and the 10 committee Democrats voting against his advancement.

However, Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) [official website] said that he would only vote in favor of Kavanaugh if the floor vote were delayed for up to one week to permit the FBI to investigate the allegations of sexual assault against Kavanaugh.  Friday morning Flake had released a statement [press release] promising to confirm Kavanaugh.

Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell will ultimately be the one to decide to delay the vote.

On Thursday the committee heard [JURIST report] testimony from both Kavanaugh and his first accuser, Christine Blasey Ford. Last week the committee postponed [JURIST report] its vote from September 21 and allowed Ford to testify.
