Imprisoned Cambodia opposition leader denied bail

Imprisoned Cambodian opposition leader Kem Sokha [BBC backgrounder] was denied bail by the Cambodian Supreme Court [official website] Wednesday.

Sokha was arrested [JURIST report] last fall on charges on trying to overthrow the government, and the Cambodia National Rescue Party was dissolved. Sokha has not been given a trial since he was imprisoned.

Cambodia’s leader, Hun Sen [BBC report] has been in power for more than 30 years. Some hoped that the Supreme Court would let Sohka out on bail, as in recent days journalists have been released [CPJ report] on bail, and the Cambodian elections were held in July. In the July elections, Sen’s ruling party won all of the seats [Al Jazeera report]. The released journalists, however, are still facing charges of espionage.
