Saudi Arabia arrests prominent human rights activist

Amnesty International (AI) [advocacy website] responded [report] to the arrest of prominent human rights defender Mohammed al-Bajadi in Saudi Arabia on Friday, pointing out the arrest as continuation of the country’s crack down on human rights.

Mohammed al-Bajadi founded the Saudi Civil and Political Rights Association (ACPRA), which was shut down by Saudi authorities after its continued campaigns for the rights of prisoners. The report stated that the civil rights advocate was previously convicted in 2015, in which he was released early on the promise that he would “stop his activism and refrain from communicating with media and foreign organizations.”

Mohammed al-Bajadi is only one of the 10 individuals arrested in the recent apparent push to quiet human rights defenders.

AI concluded stating, “It is time for this rank hypocrisy to stop.”

Supreme court overturns racially restrictive covenants

On May 3, 1948, the Supreme Court ruled that racially-restrictive covenants violate the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, even covenants between private individuals. In Shelley v. Kraemer, the Court overturned a covenant among members of a neighborhood in St. Louis, Missouri that restricted home sales to only white families.
