[JURST] Palestinian political parties Hamas and Fatah [Al Jazeera backgrounders] on Thursday announded [Reuters report] a reconciliation deal in which Hamas has agreed to hand over administrative control of Gaza to Fatah in Cairo.

While the agreement has not yet been published, reports [Al Jazeera report] indicate that Hamas has not agreed to relinquish any of its military power.

The meetings between the two parties in Cairo focused on implementing the terms [text] reached between the parties in 2011. Exactly what terms have been carried over from the previous agreement is not yet known.

A source close to the negotiation indicated that Fatah will now commence similar negotiations with other Palestinian factions in Gaza in an attempt to build a more unified national government.

The agreement comes one month after Mahmoud Abbas [BBC profile], the President of Palestine, made a plea [Al Jazeera report] directed at all Palestinian factions to come together in the face of the humanitarian crises that have been plaguing the region.

Both Hamas and Fatah have praised the agreement, which ends a political rift that opened up between the two entities when Hamas beat Fatah out of power in Palestine’s 2006 election.
