UPDATE ~ US ambassador predicts more changes to Iraqi draft constitution

[JURIST] US Ambassador to Iraq Zalmay Khalilzad [official profile] said Tuesday that there could be further changes to the draft Iraqi constitution [English translation; JURIST news archive]. Khalilzad told reporters that he believes "that a final, final draft has not yet been, or the edits have not been, presented yet." Under the Transitional Administrative Law [text], the draft presented to parliament [JURIST report] Sunday cannot be amended, but Khalilzad said that "edits" could still be made to the text. Sunni Arabs continue to have several objections to the draft charter [JURIST document], including references to federalism and Saddam Hussein's Baath party. Khalilzad has praised the submission of a draft [press release] to parliament and called on all Iraqis to read it and debate its merits before the October 15 referendum. AP has more.
