Virginia late-term abortion ban ruling [4th Circuit]

Richmond Medical Center for Women, et al. v. Hicks, et al., United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, June 3, 2005 [finding unconstitutional a Virginia law prohibiting a controversial late-term partial-birth abortion procedure because it lacks an exception to protect a woman's health]. Excerpt:

Because the Virginia Act does not contain an exception for circumstances when the banned abortion procedures are necessary to preserve a woman's health, we affirm the summary judgment order declaring the Act unconstitutional on its face. We likewise affirm the permanent injunction against enforcement of the Act.

Ferdinand Marcos declares martial law in the Philippines

On September 21, 1972, President Ferdinand Marcos signed Proclamation 1081, implementing martial law in the Philippines. Marcos used the proclamation not only to suppress a communist insurgency but to eliminate political opponents as well. He remained in power until he was forced from office and into exile by the People Power Revolution in 1986.
