[JURIST] Ohio Governor Bob Taft [official website] Thursday vetoed as too restrictive [press release] a ban on using funds from a high-tech job initiative [Third Frontier program website] to pay for embryonic stem cell research. Taft said that the ban in its current form would ban funding for stem cell work that is currently acceptable under federal regulations supported by President Bush. The Republican governor received praise from some Democrats for his decision to veto the ban and Democrats may now be willing to back a proposed $500 million bond package held up over the stem cell issue.
