BREAKING NEWS ~ Annan fires UN staffer for role in oil-for-food scandal

[JURIST] AP is reporting that United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has fired suspended UN staffer Joseph Stephanides [JURIST report] for his role in the UN oil-for-food scandal [BBC timeline].

India constitution ratified

On January 26, 1950, India ratified its constitution, formally making the new country a republic. On the same day, Rajendra Prasad was inaugurated as the republic's first president. The anniversary is celebrated today as Republic Day in India.
