Hague tribunal sends war crimes case to Bosnian court

[JURIST] The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia [JURIST news archive] Tuesday referred a war crimes case to a Bosnian national court, the War Crimes Chamber of the State Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina [JURIST report], the first time it has authorized such a transfer. Under pressure to wrap up cases from the Balkan wars by 2010, the court is now looking to send lower-level cases to national courts so it can itself focus on more high-profile defendants. The defendant in the referred case, Radovan Stankovic [BBC report] is charged [UN indictment] with crimes against humanity, including rape. The ICTY says he will be transferred in 30 days.
