[JURIST] The US Department of Justice [official website] announced Thursday that Sandy Berger [National Press Club profile], former national security advisor in the Clinton administration, will plead guilty to charges of unauthorized removal and retention of classified material. Berger is scheduled to appear in federal court Friday, facing the possibility of a year in jail and $100,000 in fines. Berger has been quoted as admitting to taking the documents containing information on anti-terror efforts that he said he had wanted to study, and has called the entire incident "an honest mistake" [FOX News report]. Berger was most recently an advisor on Senator John Kerry's campaign, but was forced to step down from the position part way through the campaign after these allegations were brought to light.
