[JURIST] The Norwegian government Friday proposed a new copyright law that will make it illegal to copy music from legally purchased CDs onto MP3 players. The proposal, meant to bring Norwegian law in line with EU rules [EU summary of intellectual property legislation], will also allow fines and a maximum sentence of three years in jail for violating copyrights and engaging in computer piracy. Critics call the proposal unclear and unenforceable, but IT industry organization ICT-Norway [organization website; organization overview in English] said "the Norwegian government has shown a broad vision that is unique in Europe." The proposal must be approved by Norway's parliament before it will become law. AP has more. From Norway, Dagbladet has local coverage.
