US considering lifetime detention for some terror suspects

[JURIST] The White House is planning a system for indefinitely imprisoning terror suspects it is unwilling to set free or turn over to foreign or domestic courts, according a report in Sunday's Washington Post [registration required]. The Pentagon and CIA have requested that the administration come up with a more permanent approach for dealing with current military and CIA detainees. The Defense Department plans to ask Congress for $25 million to build a 200-bed facility, dubbed Camp 6, for detainees unlikely to be tried by a military tribunal for lack of evidence. Another proposal, by the State Department, would transfer large numbers of Afghan, Yemeni, and Saudi detainees to new US-built facilities in their home countries to be monitored by the US.
