On this episode of the JURIST Podcast, Pitt Law students Taras Shablii and Slava Opeida discuss the recent protests, legislation and political deals to come out of their native Ukraine. They gave some background on the cause of the first wave of protests: the suspension of negotiations on a long-expected trade deal with the European Union. The government of Viktor Yanukovych then passed several laws in response to the ongoing protest movement, largely aimed at suppressing dissent. Finally, we turn to ongoing developments in this fast-moving story, including the release from prison of former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko, confirmed during our recording session on Feb. 22, 2014.

Charles Manson sentenced to death

On April 19, 1971, Charles Manson was sentenced to death for ordering the murders of Sharon Tate and others. The sentence was then commuted to life after the Supreme Court of California overturned the death penalty in 1972. The Beatles signed 10-year partnership

On April 19, 1967, John, Paul, George and Ringo - aka "The Beatles" - signed a partnership deed agreeing that the group would continue for a (further) period of ten years. When The Beatles split up prematurely in 1970, Paul applied to have the partnership terminated and a receiver appointed.
