On December 30, 2006, former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein was executed. The execution fulfilled the death sentence handed down by the Iraqi High Tribunal the month before following the former dictator's conviction on charges of crimes against humanity. Saddam and two co-defendants were accused in connection with the killing, torturing and illegal detention of residents of Dujail, a primarily Shiite town where an unsuccessful attempt on Saddam's life took place in 1982.
