Trump administration blocks fourth undocumented minor from getting abortion

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said Wednesday that a 17-year-old immigrant in government custody was blocked [ACLU] by the Trump administration from obtaining an abortion.

The unidentified 17-year-old girl, referred to as Jane Moe, is believed to be in her second trimester of pregnancy and made it clear that she wanted an abortion about two weeks ago. She has the means to obtain one, but the government will not allow it, making her the fourth undocumented immigrant to be refused an abortion by the Trump administration.

Instead of getting an abortion, the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) sent [Newsweek] Moe to a pregnancy crisis center. These centers have historically discouraged women from getting abortions.

The ACLU has stated that it will take on the case, saying that “[t]he Trump administration is blatantly ignoring the fact that the Supreme Court has held for the past 45 years that abortion is a fundamental constitutional right. And that right does not depend on immigration status.” It is also seeking an order [WP report] that would apply to future cases. For this case, the ACLU is seeking [order] a temporary restraining order (TRO) to “prohibit the government from denying [Moe] the ability to access abortion.”

In the previous cases, it was ruled [JURIST report] that the administration must allow immigrant teens to end their pregnancies.
