Justice Department appeals court injunction on travel ban

[JURIST] The US Department of Justice [official website] filed a notice [text, PDF] on Thursday saying that it will appeal a Hawaii federal judge’s order [text, PDF] against President Donald Trump’s [official website] revised travel ban [text]. The judge converted [JURIST report] his temporary restraining order into an injunction on Thursday. The Department of Justice will be appealing to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit [official website], which previously denied [JURIST report] a rehearing of Trump’s original travel ban.

Trump’s travel bans have engendered significant legal controversy leading to nationwide litigation. Last week the US Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit ordered an expedited schedule [JURIST report] for the appeal of a lower court ruling blocking the Trump travel ban. Two weeks ago a Washington federal judge who ruled against Trump’s first travel ban declined [JURIST report] to extend the injunction on the revised ban. The DOJ had requested a hold on the appeal proceedings for the first ban in February but later withdrew [JURIST reports] it after Trump signed his revised ban.
